  • Some folks have been receiving an email that appears to be from the rector, but it is not. Do not click or hit reply; delete it. It begins with something like “Where are you? I need a favour.”

If in doubt, check the email address from which the message has been sent. If it’s not from frhumphrey@stthomas.on.ca, it is not from the rector. Fr. Humphrey will never ask you to contribute gift cards via email.

There is no need to inform Fr. Humphrey of these emails, as he has no control over who tries to impersonate him, and his own email account has not been hacked or otherwise compromised.

Study of Ecclesiastes: The Cry of the Anguished Heart
Monday Evenings on Zoom beginning January 12, 2026

How does the little book called Ecclesiastes body forth the Word of God that is Christ Jesus? In this five-part study and discussion, we will consider the form and function of this short Old Testament “sermon” and explore its major themes as part of our preparation for Lent. We will consider both the explicit and the implicit messages of Ecclesiastes, and look to its moral and intellectual centre in the paradox of our heritage as sons and daughters of Adam, namely that God has placed eternity in our hearts, yet we are mortal. We will therefore consider also where and how what is articulated in Ecclesiastes is responded to in the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Parishioner John Stuart, the facilitator of the sessions, is known to many through his work on adult Christian education and formation at St. Thomas’s, as well as the courses he has run on biblical Hebrew and reading scripture. To enable people to focus on the major themes of Ecclesiastes, John will be providing participants with a “study rendering” of the text that makes accessible its key terms and major ideas. Use of the study rendering in conjunction with participants’ preferred biblical translations will facilitate discussion of the major themes of Ecclesiastes that speak to us as Christians. If you wish to ask John a question about the study or see an overview of the program, please contact him here.
